V-Roys play a kind of 'Southern Mod' A little bit country, a little bit Liverpool |
They look like something out of the past - four guys in dark suits and ties hanging around a dark, smoky-bar. And the music matches.
Slip the V-Roys disc, "Just Add Ice," in the CD player, and you get a timeless, tuneful album that could be compared to almost any superior collection of songs. There are touches of country and touches of Liverpool in the sound of the band that has been dubbed "Southern mod" in its press kit.
"I don't know if I agree with that," says drummer Jeff Bills from his Knoxville, Tenn., home. "It wasn't conscious at all," he says of the band's music and image. "We got together just to have a good time." About a year ago, the current lineup of Miller, Bills, guitarist-vocalist Mike Harrison and bassist-vocalist Paxton Sellers formed.
It was around that same time that they caught the attention of celebrated singer-songwriter Steve Earle. "We were in awe of him because we'd been fans for years," Harrison says, recalling the band's first meeting with Earle Earle ended up co-producing "Just Add Ice" with Ray Kennedy, and the album is the first release on his E-Squared label.
