THE V-ROYS, Just Add Ice, * * * 1/2 (out of five). Like the Bottle Rockets, The V-Roys are a roots-rich bar band with a rock 'n' roll soul and a honky-tonk heart. But the band's high-spirited debut, Just Add Ice, carries the renegade stamp of producer Steve Earle, who has dedicated his career to crashing musical boundaries. Hearty singing and playing distinguish mix-and-match songwriting that zips from exhilarating barroom power pop ("Sooner Or Later") to bunkhouse ballads ("Goodnight Loser") to happy-hour sing-alongs ("Cold Beer Hello"). The resulting beer-blast of an album as startling to the ear as the band's snazzy suit-and-tie image is to the eye.
